Baton Rouge Job Growth - September 2023

The Louisiana Workforce Commission has just released statewide employment figures for September 2023 and Baton Rouge is looking good again!

Baton Rouge added 2,600 jobs from August 2023 to September 2023 and a total of 11,200 jobs have been created in our area since September 2022. Baton Rouge's total job base is estimated at 426,500 second only to New Orleans with 571,100!

The State of Louisiana now has the largest number of employed residents in its history as of September 2023 with an estimated total of 2,021,818. Our statewide unemployment rate is down to 3.3% which is tied for the lowest in our history.

As I've noted before, our Baton Rouge economy is really firing ahead with outstanding job growth and there's more growth on the horizon as more Oil & Gas plant expansion and new plant projects continue to receive final approval and funding. This job growth is what will insulate our housing economy to a great degree from any kind of real pricing deflation or crash. There are not enough houses being built, or currently for sale to accommodate this type of sustained job growth once interest rates get settled down.

One of the great positives and negatives (some say - I don't) about the Baton Rouge economy and the housing industry is that we never get too hot or cold. The types of price appreciation in good times and price depreciation in bad times that you see so often on both coasts and many other major interior cities normally doesn't happen here. Our economy and housing infrastructure generally follow along with national trends, but not at the extremes or even close to the extremes that we have historically seen across the country.
