Loren Scott - longtime economic professor and forecaster for Louisiana - has just recently come out with his jobs/economic growth forecast for Baton Rouge.....and it looks quite positive for us!
The headline is that the Baton Rouge metropolitan area is projected to add 21,600 jobs over the next two years which equates to a greater than a 2% growth rate. That's significant as usually anything over a 1.5% job growth rate is considered good. So what's driving that elevated job growth for Baton Rouge?
Currently $21,300,000,000 dollars of approved industrial projects have been green-lit. There are primarily plant expansion projects as well as new plant construction. Local industrial construction firms have estimated that these projects along will drive around 10,000 new jobs in our area. LSU has approved nearly $800,000,000 in new construction projects and there are 2 new hospital related significant construction projects slated to begin.
Baton Rouge is quite fortunate in that we have 3 strong, substantial pillars underpinning our economy - home to the state government, LSU & the industrial plants. These industries tend to be stable & growing while providing very good paying jobs with benefits.
This type of job growth is what continues to drive our rather robust housing market. We need more houses to support this type of population growth and while builders are stepping up, its not enough to fully accommodate our growth.
