The City of Baton Rouge just announced a huge, 20 Year Agreement with American Cruise Lines to bring cruise ship dockings back to downtown Baton Rouge!. It is estimated that this will inject at least $25,000,000 into the Baton Rouge economy throughout the life of this agreement.

As an added benefit, American Cruise Lines will be spending around $2,000,000 to refurbish the landing dock that their ships will use to dock downtown. This dock had fallen into disrepair over the years and is now being brought back to life at no cost to the city.

It is expected that 100 cruise ships will dock downtown in 2026 and that roughly 17,000 passengers will leave the ship to explore parts of Baton Rouge as part of their cruising package. This should be huge for downtown, especially the 2 casinos that currently sit on the Mississippi River - The Queen and Bally's!

Two things that surprised me most about this announcement: the typical Mississippi River Cruise costs around $10,000 per person (and can range up to $15,000!) AND that the average income for these cruising passengers is around $240,000 per year. These are the perfect type of tourism dollars that will ultimately make a significant impact on Baton Rouge and particularly downtown.
